At least not enough for me.If you know nothing about electronics and audiophilia it might quench your quest for "stereo" know-how, but I was disappointed because it is supposedly a "goldmine" of information. As a newbie myself, I found this to be an excellent introduction to the world of high end audio. But I imagine that even many people already owning some very expensive high end systems would find some pearls of wisdom here. The text deals with sometimes complex concepts in a straightforward and comprehensible manner. It is quite comprehensive, covering the full source-to-signal path, and everything from vintage tube set ups to modern digital and multi-channel AV systems. As fast as things may be changing in the world of music delivery (home networking and hi-res streaming etc.), much of the knowledge about system and component topologies and configurations is probably perennial. Vincelette Jr. -- Extensive update of an earlier edition : I would have liked to have a little more discussion on HD radio and internet radio; specifically, the bit rates and the consequences of the aggressive digital compression that endows HD radio with about one tenth the resolution of red book CD. Magnum Dynalab, the top manufacturer of FM tuners that cost thousands of dollars, refuses to make an HD tuner because of the extremely lossy compression and the difficulty of any tuner to lock onto the digital signal that puts out about 10% or less of the power of the analog FM signal. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from CADM -- A very useful book : I bought this book a few days ago as I began considering changing parts of my hifi system. The book seems to be perfectly aimed at people like me - someone who knows little about high end hifi (apart from knowing what sounds bad to me) but has a fairly good knowledge of physics and engineering. I often look at reviews in magazines thinking that the reviewer is on something when they talk about the musicality of a tone arm let alone a phono cable or mains connector! But this book has helped me to see some of the science behind the claims and therefore to judge where money might be better spent, rather than relying on rules of thumb about how much to spend on amplification vs speakers etc. The chapter on "listening" with the terms used to describe how things sound was useful and helps a more objective understanding of reviews. The techy sections are also useful - but can be a little tough to follow - fortunately you can skip them without ill effect. Every magazine reviewer says you should conduct listening tests which is true, but not easy when knowledgeable retailers are few and far between and rarely stock all the things you are looking for - so I hoped the book would say something about putting a whole system together. This is the main missing element in the book - not enough useful information on systems integration and how to put a whole system together where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. But if you know relatively little about hifi - this is a great book. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 12, 2013 )

It goes into great detail about the whole 2 channel setup. Everything is explained setup by setup so the reader does not feel confused. It is a good read as everything is explained in plain "English". You can skip chapters if you want, in case some topics don't interest you or apply to you. This is definitely not a Hi-Fi magazine as it does not give any product recommendations, but more like a reference book on the subject of High-End audio. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Maestro -- Excellent for audiophiles building/improving a system : This is a well-written "manual" for those who love music and want to maximize the performance of their audio systems. No, Mr. Harley is not a physicist; you don't have to be to grasp what makes for great sound quality. So let's keep the book's stated purpose in focus here. It is not an electronics manual for audio engineering. It still does an admirable job explaining which specs to pay attention to when auditioning gear, and what the specs mean. Period. The author also does an excellent job at conveying his enthusiasm for high-fidelity music reproduction, and he gives useful tips on improving already-excellent audio systems. Highly recommended for those who are building their first hi-end system, but it's also suitable for those who want to get the most out of existing systems. I enjoyed it from the latter perspective, and also because I wanted to expand my knowledge of audio gear and how they work. ( Reviewed in Canada on April 4, 2014 )
